Body Worlds and The Brain

Has anyone seen this exhibit yet?

http://www.omsi.edu/bodyworlds

How do they do it? Where do they get the bodies from? Do you consider this art or a form of art? This is the information on the official BodyWorlds site regarding where the bodies come from.

Body Donation for Plastination

All anatomical specimens on display in the BODY WORLDS exhibitions are authentic. They belonged to people who declared during their lifetime that their bodies should be made available after their deaths for the qualification of physicians and the instruction of laypersons. Many donors underscore that by donating their body, they want to be useful to others even after their death. Their selfless donations allow us to gain unique insights into human bodies, which have thus far been reserved for physicians at best. Therefore, we wish to thank the living and deceased body donors.

Did you know there is an Institute of Plastination? One reason they created the Institute is because, "The complexity and work involved in preparing these specimens far exceeds the capacity of most interested institutes. Preparing a technically correct, whole-body plastinate does, after all, require 1000 to 1500 man-hours." 1500 hours, that's crazy.

Thoughts? Is it art?

  1. Really cool--it's amazing how much work each requires! I love the lungs. Yeah, I'd consider it art. The way the bodies are intentionally arranged for effect.... They are beautiful, I'd say. And useful. It's awesome that they're showing at omsi now.

  2. i think its art but it really grosses me out and the people who do it i wouldnt really consider artists.. that just sounds like 1500 hours of gagging and no fun. it looks so cool though so i'm glad someone out there does it.

  3. I am planning on going to Body Worlds soon!! I am fascinated by this stuff! To me human anatomy is definitively art. It has color, pattern, texture and makes most people want to look at it. The piece above with the human posing in a metallic ring thing has a great composition to it.

  4. I have been wanting to go see this exhibit! Yeah, i think its art! These piece are definitely thought provoking and apply the principles or art and design. Both pictures have great texture, but the one on the left does for sure

  5. I think this is so cool! And I would definitely say it's art. I absolutely love the lungs because they have such great texture and color. I think we should have a class field trip to OMSI!

  6. I think this is art also! 1500 hours is crazyyy, but it looks so cool in the end. The texture is great! I second the idea of a class field trip to OMSI :)

  7. That is soo funny cause I literally just got home from going today and immediately saw this! Weird! I think it is art!! I was marveling at all the textures today in the cases and I thought it was so crazy how it is completely natural. The people who created it also had an influence because they posed them in really intricate ways in order to display the different parts in the most effective and meaningful way. super cool! I had fun today everyone should go see it.. student discount! -- Amelia Garone

  8. My definition of art is any arrangement that communicates an idea, and I'd say this arrangement of the human body does communicate the idea of how intricate the body is, but I think the focus of this exhibit should remain on science rather than shape, color, texture, etc.

  9. I don't think the exhibit itself is art... it is more a display of "oh hey check out how cool we all are" rather than a manipulation or depiction of something that is someone's new idea... the time is all the prep and preservation of the organisms. The bodies are donated to science after the person dies.

I just look at it as if someone put a leaf on display and asked is it art i wouldn't even hesitate to say no.

  10. i definitely view the exhibit and the bodies as art although it kind of grosses me out since it's so realistic and the bodies are authentic.

  11. I remember the body part exhibit at OMSI! I thought it was very cool how they can make like perfect replica's of actual body parts

  12. My mom asked me to go to this exhibit with her but I'm scared. I think that the exhibit should be considered art because of all the effort concentration and time it must take but i hate thinking that all the parts are real. You would not only get to see something cool if you went you could also learn something so i should probably go.

  13. Right when I saw this I thought that we should do a field trip to see this and I'm glad other people want to too! If it'll be here by the time that our next pieces are due then we should definitely go. I don't think that our bodies/body parts themselves are art but the way they created the exhibit definitely makes it art.

  14. I think that the way it is being presented currently makes it more of a science exhibition than art. They're focusing much more on how the human body works and showing other people how it works more than emphasizing anything like texture, color, etc.

But I think it could definitely be done as art, if someone was interested in doing so!

  16. This is so weird but really cool at the same time. And I agree that we should go on a field trip! But I would consider this art especially after seeing that it takes so long to create. It is really interesting how intricately done it is, but I could never do that because it really grosses me out. But kudos to those people who can! Woo art.

  17. I'm so excited to go and see this! I think that there is definitely an artistry that goes into the exhibit. I'm excited to see it in person though! Abby, Zack, and I are probably going to go!

  18. I saw this exhibit a couple years ago. It was really gross, but there is definitely some artistic value seen within these bodies. But I've got no idea how they separated all of those internal organs perfectly from the body. What really amazed me was the spinal cord still attached to the brain and spread out over a glass pane. Anybody else see that? That was some crazy stuff. Very interesting to look at though.

  19. I really want to see this exhibit! I think that this kind of stuff is cool and interesting. I think that this is a great combination of science and art. Just because they use dead human bodies as their media, doesn't mean that it's not art. This is a whole new way to look at art. I think it's very creative. It's great that we can learn so much from this artwork, and I think it means a lot that these people donated their bodies for science and art, so that more people can learn about the human body in new and exciting ways.

  20. I think this is so interesting! I'm not quite sure if I would call it art. now its based on opinion but, at the same time its 3d placement of the human form. So probably, its difficult i'm sure, but its interesting and something I defintly want to go take a look.

  21. I think it's the perfect example of science and art working together! 3d art all the way! Def going to see this

  22. Ugh, I want to go so badly! I definitely think this is a form of art. The bodies of living organisms are truly incredible, and incredibly beautiful in my opinion. I'd be one of those people working on the it if I could, haha. What an amazing project.

  24. I can only look at it when I can forget that the parts were once parts of real people...ugh it freaks me out a bit. And I feel like although the displays involve applying the principles of art, I think that because the intent is more science-based and not meant to be an art form, that I wouldn't call the displays art, just artfully done...which contradicts myself haha.

  25. My dad went to see this a few years ago. he said it was cool...i feel like the building would have lots of flys and smell a little tho... Yes i think its an art form. it takes time and thought to put each piece together(or in this case strip each piece apart).
